Small glands, loud hormones: hypothalamus → pituitary → thyroid, adrenals, pancreas, gonads.

Endocrine Glands anatomy diagram
The structures
  1. HypothalamusThermostat and master controller
  2. PituitaryRelays orders: TSH, ACTH, ADH, growth hormone
  3. ThyroidMetabolic rate (T3/T4); sits over the trachea
  4. ParathyroidsFour rice-grain glands — calcium control
  5. Adrenal cortexCortisol and aldosterone
  6. Adrenal medullaEpinephrine and norepinephrine
  7. Pancreatic isletsInsulin (beta) and glucagon (alpha)
Why it matters on shift
  • Post-thyroidectomy: watch calcium — nicked parathyroids cause tingling, then tetany (Chvostek/Trousseau)
  • A patient on long-term steroids who gets sick needs MORE steroid, not less — adrenal crisis is real
  • Unexplained hypotension + hyponatremia + hyperkalemia = think adrenal insufficiency
