How it works

Block sodium reabsorption in the loop of Henle — the strongest diuretics. Water follows sodium out.

Side effects
Hypokalemia — the big oneDehydration, hypotensionOtotoxicity with rapid IV pushHyponatremia, hypomagnesemia
Monitor
  • Potassium before dose — chase the K if it's low and there's no replacement order
  • Daily weight, strict I&O, orthostatic BP
  • IV push SLOWLY (typically ≤ 10 mg/min furosemide) — fast push risks hearing damage
  • Urine output response — no response is reportable
🎓 Patient teaching

Take in the morning (or you'll be up all night). Eat potassium foods unless told otherwise. Daily weight; report 2–3 lb overnight gain.
